ALSP Community Support Group Meeting with Guest Speaker (Connolly Steigerwald – Certified Genetics Counselor – NYU Langone Health)

The ALSP Community Support Group meeting is a free online community where people living with ALSP, their friends and family can ask questions, get advice and find support in a safe, non-judgmental environment. This is a virtual support group meeting held via zoom, facilitated by Heidi Edwards, President & Founder of Sisters’ Hope Foundation.

Please welcome our guest speaker for this event: Connolly Steigerwald, MS, CGC.

Connolly is a certified genetic counselor at NYU Langone Health’s division of Neurogenetics in NYC, practicing alongside Neurologist Dr. Nicolas Abreu. At the clinic, they see individuals of all ages who may have a genetic cause of their symptoms. In adults, this often includes individuals with various types of inherited dementias or leukodystrophies. They provide evaluations, coordinate testing, and facilitate family member education and testing for the families that come to see them. Prior to joining NYU, Connolly trained at Columbia University Medical Center in NYC, completing a specialty rotation in neurology with a focus on frontotemporal dementia, Alzheimer disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Connolly will be discussing:

·         Genetics 101 / what is a “gene”?

·         What is genetic testing?

·         What is the role of a geneticist / genetic counselor?

·         CSF1R genetics and inheritance

·         Typical process of genetic testing

·         Review of benefits and limitations of genetic testing
